Innovative approaches to
furniture design using
new timber bending
methods are featured in
a new booklet published
by Swinburne’s Faculty
of Design.
'Technology transfer:
Design in a Scientific
Research Program’ is the
result of the faculty’s
contribution to the
seven year Cooperative
Research Centre (CRC)
for Wood Innovations.
Their objective was to
create products that
could be manufactured
from new materials and
technologies developed
by other projects in the
CRC.
The Wood Innovation CRC
began in 2001 and
included the University
of Melbourne, Swinburne
University of
Technology, state
governments, research
organisations and
industry partners.
It investigated the
modification of timber
by applying microwaves,
adding resins in the
structure of the wood
fibre and by combining
new timber production
technologies to
establish wood as the
sustainable material of
choice.

‘Technology transfer’
describes the work of
designers from
Swinburne’s Faculty of
Design, led by Professor
Helmut Lueckenhausen,
who were an integral
part of the research
team.
The 64-page booklet
includes work by
postgraduate students
and faculty members
Professor Lyndon
Anderson, Lotars Gintars,
Christine Thong and
Blair Kuys.
“Including designers and
product design engineers
at the outset of the
technology development
can greatly enhance
commercialisation of new
technologies,” said
Professor Lueckenhausen.
“Physical scientists and
engineers can develop
new materials but they
need highly skilled
artisans and
tradespeople to
translate their ideas
into real prototypes.
This booklet highlights
some of the top-quality
creative work of
designers using timber
in ways that metals and
plastics are used in
furniture design.”
